Show HN: Hackyournews.com v2

A year and a half after I published https://HackYourNews.com, I've rewritten it to be neater and added support for more news sources.

HackYourNews.com v1 had a great response on HN [1] and consistently sees ~2k weekly unique visitors.

There were many long-standing requests that I wanted to fulfill (thanks for your patience!): a proper dark mode, correct rendering on mobile devices, and more cogent summaries.

This rewrite is the result. gpt-4o-mini reduces the cost of summarization to an absurd degree, so it's now sustainable to keep this free service going!

Someday, I hope to use the Batch API [2] to drive down costs even further.

Enjoy.

I love this.

I found fonts too small for my liking and wanted to filter sources quickly so I created an alternative site using yours as backend just now.

https://news-digest-nine.vercel.app/

Source code: https://github.com/cloudycotton/news_digest

REST API: https://news-digest-nine.vercel.app/hn

If you need help with making the site more pretty, and optimise your backend calls, email is in the profile.

That's an interesting layout! Thanks for sharing, will investigate improving the whitespace utilization.

I love the idea and what it provides but the UX is kinda rough. The line spacing and font makes it hard to focus (I dont know what it is). Also, Mistral Small would drive your cost even lower (https://mistral.ai/en/products/la-plateforme#pricing)

I've increased the line height and font sizes as suggested in a sibling comment. Will investigate Mistral Small, thanks!

It would also help if there was more space between entries than between wrapped lines within an entry. Everything runs together.

Would a thin line divider be preferable to whitespace?

I think adding a marking like a bullet point would help a lot. It’s really hard to know where a new article title starts and end

I've increased the font weight of the article title; this bolded look alongside additional vertical spacing really helps to add visual separation. Take a look and let me know how it can be improved further!

Have you tried increasing the line-height for the links to increase readability?

I think something in between 20px and 25px works best for me.

I've added this, and it already looks much better. Thanks for the actionable suggestion!

The last link in the "Hacker news" section somehow points to a Reddit thread:

> Vince Gilligan calls for more aspirational heroes in TV amid rise of real-life bad actors

There's no corresponding HN article (see https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que...), and the "Comments" link points to https://old.reddit.com/r/UpliftingNews/comments/1iqvqfn/brea....

Interesting; that story's already rolled off the front page, so I'm not seeing it currently.

Now that's hilarious (that's a link to https://chaos.social/@hexa/114009069746212598 )

Yeah, trying to figure out how to get JS-heavy content without resorting to a headed browser.
